Artist Bio:

Born to Dominican Parents in Queens, New York in 1969, Roger spent his younger years soaking up the musical influences that were the lifeblood of his home town. It was the diversity of these influences, from salsa, blues and soul to disco, rock and hip-hop, that solidified Roger’s dedication to representing this spectrum of musical styles. Thus, Roger’s sound is impossible to pigeon hole, refusing to fit the template of any one genre:

“I have always listened to a wide range of music, taking different influences from hundreds of styles. The diversity of the sounds I hear influence different lines of thought when I’m in the studio creating something new”

After leaving college to follow his music-filled heart, Roger’s passion for DJing conquered his hometown, and the last days of the 1980s saw Roger spinning beats in the Big Apple’s most notorious clubs. 1990 saw the S-Man catapulted into international limelight with his first hit Luv Dancin, released on the eminent Strictly Rhythm label under the first of many monikers Underground Solution

Roger’s creative evolution through the rest of the decade yielded a string of hits, and whilst working under his Transatlantic Soul alias, Roger conceived the enduring legend Release Yourself. Born in 1996 through club smash single Release Yo Self, the brand has grown into a worldwide phenomenon that embodies Roger’s deep belief in the liberty music can bring. Now an exclusive clubbing concept, a CD mix series, an IDMA winning podcast radio show that touches millions, and an annual residency that still dominates the scene in its 7th season in Ibiza, Release Yourself continues to gather momentum as one of the most recognised and seminal brands on the global scene today.

Roger has remixed superstars such as Chic, Daft Punk, Diana Ross and The Police, contributed to the soundtrack of Hollywood movie Blade, and founded 3 record labels before his beloved Stealth. Since forming his opus label Stealth Records in 2002, the recognition has continued to roll in. Even through the glare of his massive commercial success, the expanse of Roger’s fame has neither diluted his outlook nor marred his creativity, and he remains a true champion of new music with one ear always pressed firmly to the underground. In one week alone Roger scored a trio of tracks in the top 25 Billboard Charts, but even after winning a Grammy in 2004 and establishing a global fan base of millions, the S-man remains grounded, making it clear that “Really, as always, I just do what I do and am grateful to be able to follow my heart.”

Roger’s infamous energy and dizzying passion ensure that the live recognition keeps rolling in. Having picked up the “Best House DJ” title from Ibiza’s prestigious DJ awards in 2007, Roger is celebrating two nominations this year, for “Best House DJ” and “Best International DJ” categories.

Whether overwhelming a frenzied crowd at Miami WMC or pushing musical boundaries on the White Isle, Roger’s love of connecting with a crowd ensures that he keeps his status as a true citizen of the World amidst a continuous whirlwind of global touring. At every gig, the S-Man’s relationship with his international network of fans is evident in the mutual energy and appreciation between Roger and the crowd:

“One thing that’s very important to me is to take into account what the people on the dance floor are feeling – to reach out and connect to their emotions allows me to share what’s in my mind with them. I always have a strong connection with my fans and their dedication and love has allowed me to thrive”

Artist Bio:

One of the pinnacles of Chicago house music’s ’90s wave, Derrick Carter began DJ’ing at the age of nine, spinning disco records at family reunions. Born and raised in the western suburbs, Carter was into music from a young age, but during his teens Chicago’s house scene sucked him in for good. Before long Carter became a strong presence in the city’s underground dance scene. “When I got my driver’s license at 16 my sneak ability was validated,” he laughs. “I was a fierce bedroom jock for a long time. After you mix for the love of it for six or seven years, you get it pretty tight and you can take it on the road.” He got by working at dance-music specialty stores like Gramaphone and gigging at parties. Later he landed regular DJ stints at Shelter, Foxy’s, and Smart Bar. Though he doesn’t spin much locally anymore, when he does he attracts large crowds. Most of the time he works in Europe, where he’s become a minor celebrity among dance-music aficionados :
“Its hard not to laugh on the occaisions when you’ll make 20 times what you make in Chicago on a Saturday night, but back home there are also times when you just do it for fun… So many people come up to me and say ‘Man, I had the worst day, My girlfriend left me, I locked my keys in my car, but you turned it around for two hours, and that made me able to get up in the morning’ That’s the best thing going.”

Derrick’s sets are rooted in house, but he freely travels outside club tastes, seamlessly incorporating old-school disco, soul, jazz and whatever catches his fancy.

His debut single “Love Me Right” appeared in 1987, just after he graduated from college. Another single (”Symbols and Instruments” as Mood) appeared in 1989, but the Chicago house scene faded soon after, leaving Carter and other artists with few to play for except themselves.

Thanks in part to Cajmere’s and Felix Da Housecat’s respective labels (Relief, Radikal Fear), Chicago house made a comeback during the mid-’90s and began to offer impressive newcomers in addition to the old guard. Carter, recording for the Organico label, returned with several singles, and an album as Sound Patrol. In 1995, he began working with a live band as the Sound Patrol Orchestra.

Several mix albums have appeared, including Cosmic Disco on MixMag and Pagan Offering on Pagan. Carter has also founded two labels (Blue Cucaracha and Classic) and remixed tracks from Chicago’s own post-rock heroes Tortoise. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Since then pioneering, innovative tracks and consequent critical acclaim have repeatedly marked Derrick out as once of the most important players in Dance music.

Carter says that due to his growing notoriety his production talents have been requested by pop-oriented acts. But he prefers to remain underground. Although enthused about his own Blue Cucaracha label and a new UK-based imprint he runs called Classic, he’s reluctant to offer much explanation of either label’s MO–other than each releases records when the mood strikes him:
“I like to keep myself pretty invisible. You may think I’m somewhere, but I’ve already left.”

Artist Bio:

In an era where digital labels increasingly dominate underground house, DJ Mes (Jason Sutton) and his San Francisco-based Guesthouse and Guess Who Music imprints have defied the trend, producing a big brand of vinyl and digital beats that range from quirky and jackin’ to deep and dirty. Since its May 2005 inception, Guesthouse has guided the vibe of the underground sound, introducing artists such as Cosy Creatures, The Sound Republic and Gramophonedzie to global house audiences and staking claim as one of the industry’s premiere, international labels.

Mes’ music career dates back to the mid-1990s, when the Bay Area-born producer took early influence from the likes DJ Dan (Funky Techno Tribe) and Tony Hewitt (Tango Recordings). As an avid fan of ’70s and ’80s funk, disco, electro and hip-hop, Mes quickly learned to meld his early musical influences into a deep, driving sound that would go on to define him as a DJ. Mes’ attack of bass line-heavy tracks separated his performances from other West Coast DJs of the day, and quickly earned him performance opportunities at the legendary San Francisco’s Area 51 parties, The Gathering, Freedom and The Burning Man Festival.

His performance success led to his co-founding of Daddy’s Records in 1996 with partners Rob Doten (Wicked, Greyhound Records) and Buna (Wicked. E.T.I., Oboro). Shortly after, he began producing regularly and landed his first residency at Reno, Nevada’s Spin Cycle. The gig would kick start what has become an international touring lifestyle for Mes, who—more than 12 years later—continues touring regularly and showcases his blend of West Coast beats and Chi-town boompty house. Some of his signature stops have included Chicago’s esteemed Slicks Lounge, Scotland’s Isle of Skye festival and the Deliro Party on the Sugar Loaf in Rio Brazil.

After years of releasing tracks on acclaimed labels such as Black Cherry, Magnetic and Safe In Sound, Mes was ready to release music on his own terms. In 2005, he set out to launch a vinyl imprint that embodied the same genre-crossing sound he played and produced both on the decks and in the studio. Inspired by the close-knit vibe of the underground house community in the U.S. and beyond, the name Guesthouse was born. Since its inception, Guesthouse has released more than 60 EP’s, including 33 vinyl releases and slew of other bootleg cuts on the its sub label, Guess Who.

“With Guesthouse, I’ve always tried to focus on consistency, quality and music aimed directly at the dance floor,” Mes says. “It’s important for me to support and showcase mainstay artists as well as the freshest up-and-coming talent, and I think that’s one thing that sets us apart from other labels.”

Some of that breakthrough talent includes boundary-bending artists such as Gramophonedzie, Australian producer Ricardo Rae, and The Sound Republic, whose first two full EP’s on Guesthouse helped usher in the new school sound that defines underground house today. Classic cuts such as Cosy Creature “Show You the Way” continue to pulse as the defining beat to a genre that continually evolves in subtle ways.

Today, Mes continues bringing his big bass-lined tracks to global audiences through both his label releases and performances. He continues to play as a resident for Los Angeles’ HAWT Music Collective as well maintaining prolific production schedule for both of his labels.

“I started Guesthouse to put out music that I liked and might not otherwise get the chance to see the light of day,” he says. “It’s really helped me reach a much wider audience by getting into record stores around the globe—thus making Guesthouse a household name for boompty house music.”

Artists Bio:

From raving in the mid-nineties to DJing at sweat-soaked college parties full of cornhuskers out of their minds on every drug imaginable in downstate Illinois in the late nineties, to busting ass in the studio in the present day, it’s always been a precarious mixture of fun and hard work for The Sound Republic (the partnership of John Mork and Frankie J. Monacella). actually it’s probably mostly been fun. But those early years are a bit hazy and you can ask anyone: staying up for more than 24 hours straight is hard.

Coming from a diverse background of musical influences, both John and Frankie have had their hands in lots of different musical honeypots throughout the years. Frankie has enjoyed a long and hearty love affair with the breakbeat, and spent a good part of his DJing career pushing drum n bass in Chicago and out of speakers across the Midwest. This was followed by a short stint as being one of the original jocks in the U.S. to pick up on the UK Garage/2-step sound along with then-partner in crime DJ Casper. Both eventually tired of the UKG sound and found their ways back to drum n bass. All the while Mr. Mork was busy collecting and playing house music with nearly obsessive- compulsive tendencies, playing events all over the Midwest and generally concerning himself with all things that go bump.

Longtime friends and collaborators, John and Frankie had worked together on a few projects in the past, but things really started marinating for The Sound Republic project in the spring of 2004 when they started up the weekly night Swallow (at Sugar, Chicago) focusing on that quirky new-school brand of house music à la Jacob London, Lawnchair Generals, East Coast Boogiemen, Swirl People, and the like. It’s exactly this forward-thinking, kind-of-weird, and definitely-jackin’ sound that can be expected from John & Frankie’s production.

This night eventually fizzled and gave birth to their new monthly ‘Grizzled’ at legendary Chicago nightspot Lava Lounge, a bang up night of new school house that has residents John, Frankie, and Bunchlox Music label owner Karl Almaria playing to capacity crowds alongside guest like Raoul Belmans of Swirl People, DJ Jonana, Guesthouse Music label boss DJ Mes, Olivier Desmet, and plenty more heavy hitters representing the new school US House Sound!

Now clocking long hours in the studio, the Sound Republic is working hard on making the tunes that not only they want to hear, but that set dancefloors off as well. With releases out and slated for release on such heavy hitting imprints as Guesthouse, Tango, Lowdown, Dae Recordings, Bunchlox, Jackin Tracks, and Guess Who? (under the alias Francis Jilla and Johnny Drama), The Sound Republic is primed to be a major name and make real waves in the house music community.

Victor Simonelli’s name is synonymous with the cutting edge of the Dance Music scene. Simonelli is one of the New York’s finest and most prolific DJ’s. He was also one of the early pioneers of the unique NYC underground dance music movement that has now become a phenomenon it its own right and religiously followed by the clubbing faithful the world over. A producer/re-mixer, song writer, record label owner, and highly sought after DJ, are just four facets of this multi-talented young man. His discography of production, writing. mixing and editing credits reads like a “Who’s Who!

Victor’s love for music began as a youngster growing up in Brooklyn, New York. At a young age he was intrigued by his father’s huge record collection of jazz, blues, electronic, disco, new age, rock, soul, classical, new wave, ethnic, and world music. His parents could see he was talented at an early age and encouraged him to listen to all kinds of music. With this encouragement, and guidance of his parents, Victor took lessons in piano, drums, guitar and bass, as well as voice lessons. But something was missing.I liked trying all of the instruments, but nothing really grabbed me.By the age of 11, he began tuning into NY’s Radio Mix Shows on WBLS, WKTU and WXLO, (which later became WRKS,98.7 Kiss fm) and this is where he discovered the Art of mixing. When I started spinning – I just simply got lost in the music,” Victor said.

Victor’s career as a DJ started at a tender age , assisting his father. In 1979 Victor played one of his first parties with his Dad. It was a party which his Dad organized at Dance Hall (which became a seasonal event in the years that followed). In Autumn of 1982 with his Father, he entered a Tommy Boy Records Master Mix contest via Mail, (promoted via Tommy Boy Rec and Dance Music Report Magazine) , sending A master Mix which Victor and His Dad had done (of Tommy Boy Rec’s Tracks). The winners of the Contest (who’s mix was featured on Tommy Boy Triple Album) turned out to be Tommy Musto, Tommy Sozzi , and Ralphie D (who Victor did not know at the time), though who were also Brooklynites. Within a year Victor started spinning at mobile parties on his own. It was here that he learn his craft and began to develop and fine-tune his ear for music noticing what tracks to play and which ones had the greatest effect on the crowd while he was spinning. His Mother heard had a friend with a small club that was closing it’s doors, and bought Victor their whole Record Collection before closing. By the end of High School Victor could not help But notice that , something was not right, “I wanted to not only mix the music,” Victor explained, “but I wanted to create the whole production”.

Attending and graduating from the ‘Centre For Media Arts’ was the first step in that direction. In 1987 after just about a year of trying to get an entry level position, Victor was hired for the job at Shakedown Studios, owned by the legendary producer, Arthur Baker – a breeding ground to the likes of David Cole (Who taught Victor how to determine the difference btween a succesful hook , and a not so memorable hook), Robert Clivilles (who advised Victor on getting good sound techniques) ,Danny Krivit, Benji Candalario, Albert Cabrera, Junior Vasquez (who gave victor many editing tips), and Bobby Konders (who learned to edit from Victor and who showed Victor Radio from the inside) , to mention but a few. Victor started his internship at the studio, and it was not long before his unique talent was discovered and he was given the opportunity to produce, mix and edit a wide range of projects for artists including: David Bowie, Will Downing, Talking Heads, Quincy Jones, Deborah Harry, Sinead O’Connor and Al Jarreau. During this time , Victor practically lived at Shakedown sound , in room with Tapes from Rick Rubin to Diana Ross , from Paul Simpson to Rolling Stones , from Afika Baambata to Hall and Oates. In late 1988, Victor merged with Lenny Dee to form the Brooklyn Funk Essentials, a remix/production team that worked on projects for Pajama Party, Al Jareau, Denise Lopez, Arthur Baker , Robert Owens , New Order. Lenny had arrived at Shakedown after working for Nile Rodgers (lead member of Chic),Skyline studio, as an intern. It was at this time that Victor completed one of his first productions on Criminal Records. His productions for Criminal, Vendetta (run By Larry Yazgar , who assisted Victor in Learning the importance of a 7″ version) and other labels such as Fourth Floor and Nu Groove began to get him noticed. It was not long before a line of labels across New York were beating a path to Victor’s door such as Strictly Rhythm, Eightball and Maxi to mention but a few.He began to collaborate on Projects with other Producers as well , such as Danny Krivit , Satoshie Tomie , to mention but a few and Simultaneously he signed a management deal with 23 West and went on to join a roster that boasted Masters At Work and C&C Music Factory. He then moved over to Def Mix and was joined by Frankie Knuckles and Dave Morales (Who’s initials , DM , are the basis of Def Mix) and continued to work with Nu Groove and Fourth Floor.

1989-1991 saw Simonelli involved in many high profile projects, notably, composing Sybil’s single, “Oh How I Love You” (Next Plateau/London), arranging and editing James Brown’s album, “Love Overdue” (Scotti Bros) as well as BeBe and CeCe Winans single featuring Mavis Staples, entitled, “I’ll Take You There” (Capital). Victor was also on the production and mixing team for the Quincy Jones single, “I’ll be Good To You” (Qwest) featuring Chaka Khan and the legendary Ray Charles. Yvonne Turner , and Boyd Jarvis called on Victors talents on projects they were working, including Gwen Guthrie and Hamilton Bohannon. Brian Chin ex Billboard columnist , introduced Victor to Hamilton Bohannon , and Bohannon invited Victor to his home , where he explained to Victor the importance of Confidence in Self in connection with success. During this time Victor also wrote and produced for Martha Wash (unreleased project) and Sabrina Johnston (first recording as solo artist). When Danny Tenaglia moved back to NY during this time , (after spending most of the eighties living in Florida) , he saught Victors advise on one of his first Productions , playing demo for Victor before anyone else. Upon listening , it was clear for Victors ears what label it would work with. After Victor put his Edit/Arrangement touch to it , at the new Shakedown studio what became “The Harmonica Track” was ready , and then released on Arthur Bakers Minimal Records (which in later years was to be licensed onto Maxi ,and also be contained on Dave Mancusos Loft Compilation Box Set). Nile Rogers (Of Chic) and Victor met during this time , and Nile told Victor the importance of remembering Dreams (Reinforcing lesson Victors Mother taught him earlier in life) , and How many of the Chic tunes that he wrote were dreamt , having his guitar in his room with him , he would awake and put them down as they came.

By 1992 Victor began receiving calls to DJ at clubs from countries as far away as Japan , thanks to Victors engineer of the time , Gomi. It was also at this time that two of Victor’s tracks, “Feel So Right” by Solution and “I Want you To Know” by Groove Committee (which Larry Levan championed in his sets at some of his final gigs in Japan) went on to become a significant piece of the ‘Simonelli Sound’.Todd Terry , approached Victor to commend , him on his works , and to license Production from him. Todd told Victor , “When you got a sound thats working , just keep on with it”.

1993 saw Victor working on “In The .Closet” by Michael Jackson, featuring The Mystery Girl, Madonna (their only ever duet). At this point he began pumping out productions steadily, such as the blinding, “It’s So Good” by Creative Force , which then new to the business Mathius Heilbronn Engineered. The unforgettable , “I Know A Place” by Sound Of One , which Roger Sanchez released on his first Label at the time , and the classic “Dirty Games” on Nu Groove (USA) and Vinyl Solution (UK). Street Players Vol 1 EP was also made this year , which went onto inspire the making of Kenny Dopes “The Bomb” (which was created a couple of years later by Kenny). Deep Dish had not yet formed but both Sharam and Dubfire approached Victor and asked his advise on making tracks , equing , mixing , etc.Shortly thereafter they formed Yoshi Toshi Records and began Producing themselves. During this year Victor made his first of many trips to England, and helped set up Suburban Records with Tommy Musto who also owned Fourth Floor Records at the time.

1994 Victor worked on a variety of re-mixes for many artists including T-Connection , Jon Secada , Sabrina Pope (her first record) , Red-Light , Michael Proctor , Connie Harvey , Take That , and Fonda Rae as well as having written, produced and mixed songs for various underground dance music artists on Sub-Urban, Vinyl Solution UK, Eight Ball,Centre Stage Records, and many other independent labels around the world. This year saw Simonelli making his first trips to Italy, Germany, San Francisco, L.A., Australia, Switzerland, Portugal, Ibiza, and France, which this in turn opened the flood gates and calls for him to DJ. Boy George connected with Victor , complementing him on his works , and asked to be informed of all of Victors Releases. Kerri Chandler early on in his production years , borrowed victors talents on his Ionosphere EP All Join Hands track this year. In late ‘94, Victor met up with Barry Koven and Vincent Dimino to form BASSLINE Records and BIG BIG TRAX. Most notable releases on the label have been New York’s Finest’s, anthemic, “Do You Feel Me”, Connie Harvey’s gospel inspired, “Thank You Lord”, Urban Blues Project’s unforgettable, “Deliver Me”, Colonel Abrhams classi., “Not Gonna Let”, and Mone’s soulful, “Better Way” and “Never Gonna Be The Same”. It was also during this time that he launched his own production company, V.J.S. Productions, Inc., where he nurtured the likes of (and in some cases actually discovered and introduced to the business) , DJ Angel Morales (aka Angel Moraes), Jazz ‘N’ Groove, (Brian Tappert – Roy Grant), Urban Blues Project, (Marc Pomeroy), Federal Hill ,Harlem Hustlers, and Jay Jay (Hernandez) and Julius Papp to name a few.It was also at this time that John Ciafone approached Victor for guidance and advise on business and Music Making , which after several conversations, and introduction to Lem Springsteen , lead to creation of Mood to Swing

1995-1996 saw Victor signing a record deal with MCA Records for a compilation series entitled, Sound of Simonelli. His DJ Gigs had reached the point of another weekend, another country. Due to so much European work, Victor decided to expand his corporation and set up VJS Productions, Inc. Europe. In NY, amongst his many mixes/productions in the works Vocalist Michelle Weeks feautured on her first fully credited release , Groove Trend ft. Michelle Weeks – Don’t Stop was mixed by Victor and Tommy, introducing and launching Michelle Weeks onto the scene. By late 1996 VIctor was putting the final touches on the European extension of his company in Rome.

Smoove. It was also this year that Eddie Amador released “House Music , (A Spiritual Thing , A Body Thing , A Soul Thing)” , which based itself over and around base track of Victors “Feels So Right”.

2000 Victor began the Millennium in a big way by forming his European Label, Stellar Records and signing a distribution deal with Level One Distribution (owned by Joe T Vannelli at the time) , based in Milan. With an initial release schedule including singles by Mr. Mike, Connie Harvey, Robert Owens, DJ Ray Roc, Davidson Ospina, and the cultivation of many new talents, such as Junia Ovadose , Sergio Matina , and Vincenzo Sortino The new century looks “Stellar”.

In 2001 Victor mixed the Groovelift Vol 3 compilation for DJ Beat Records.Amongst many remixes done, some highlights of the year we’re ” I Wanna Rock You” by Giorgio Morodor and “Dance Little Dreamer” by Kym Mazelle. Victor spent some time in the studio on Productions as well,of which included “If Ever You’re Lonely” by Joi Cardwell on Stellar. The end of the year brought administration and staff change to Couleur 3, which closed the Groove Lift chapter. It was also this year that “Salsoul Nugget” (Produced by Ricky Morrison) was released , which in few words , was simply a re work of Victors “I Know A Place”.Label Defected (where AM-PM Rec left off) starting to pick up release schedule and utilized much of talent that Victor assisted in introducing to the scene including Jay Jay , Jazz and Groove , Angel Moraes , John Julius Knight , Julius Papp , Sandy Rivera , and many others , all of whom did (in most cases many of) their first releases in collaboration with Victor.

2002 Now working with numerous distributors around the world, this year Saw the first collaboration between Victor and Keith Thompson on “Living On The Frontline” by Keith Thompson (Produced,Mixed, and Arranged by Victor), released on Westside, and licensed onto South Africa, and France.Originally recorded by Eddie Grant in 1982,Keith,Victor and Victors Dad, James, lyrically updated it for the times, and Victor and Keith then spent much time with it,in the studio in Italy, Trinidad, the U.K, and NY.With the popularity of internet on the rise, the idea of WWW.VJSPRODUCTIONSINC.COM, came about. In the summer of 2002,initial designing began, and continued untill mid 2003

Victor has spent his entire lifetime committed and devoted to music, making his own inimitable contribution in DJ’ing, production, mixing and song-writing. It is his unique sound of uplifting and spiritual music that has propelled him to the forefront of the Dance scene, and acknowledged him with the credit of being one of its leading exponents. For Further information on Victor Simonelli at VJS Productions, Inc. 718.998.7727VJSInc@AOL.com

Before you continuing reading what’s below, I just wanted to share with you one of my friends that I shared the stage with in New York, while I was with my former band Ten City.

Meeting Judy Torres in person is an experience that’s calming, soothing and ultimately uplifting. Of course, in her music, she always delivers the heat and passion straight to your soul, but face-to-face, it’s a different type of emotion she conveys. It’s still the same fiery, heartfelt connection, just channeled in a more embracing and loving manner. And once she smiles at you and the conversation really gets going, you absolutely feel like you’re reconnecting with that old best friend you haven’t spoken to in years.

In Judy Torres’ life, it seems the gods gave her a triple portion of everything: triple the talent, triple the strife and triple the resilience. She has enjoyed a successful singing career spanning over 20 years and boasting two smash studio LPs, a slew of hit singles, dream performances at Madison Square Garden and Nassau Coliseum, shared stages with icons like Gladys Knight and Tito Puente, and a long-running position as a popular WKTU radio personality. And through it all, she has experienced some of the most liberating highs and survived the most crushing lows. Yet still, her positivity and joie de vivre have remained intact.

Born to a Cuban dad and Puerto Rican mom, Judy was raised in the Bronx, NYC mostly by her loving, dedicated single mother alongside her three brothers and younger sister. Through her early years, she had to deal with a volatile father who was alternately abusive and loving. Her mother eventually left this unstable situation and later met her stepfather. He moved in and was good for a while until he also begun to exhibit violent tendencies. This difficult childhood manifested itself in different ways in Judy’s persona – one being an ongoing challenge with her weight she deals with to this day.

“I think I have Oprah-itis,” she jokes. “I eat really good and exercise really well for about eight months and then I slack off and get tired. It stems from my childhood. I felt I never had a voice for the first thirteen or fourteen years of my life to vent out the frustration of the issues going on at home. So I filled that void with food. Also, the times when things were good at home, my father would take us to the local Cuban bakery for sweet treats and my mother would buy me a Hostess Lemon pie whenever I got good grades in school. So really, food was always a part of both the good and bad times.”

Sumptuous confectionaries aside, Judy has faced tribulations that far outweigh an overzealous sweet tooth. There was a misguided suicide attempt in her early ‘20s which thankfully led to her receiving help and lasting resolution from the haunting self-image issues of her troubled upbringing. And most recently in 2005, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, an ordeal that tested every sinew and fiber of her inner strength. MS is a disease without a cure that attacks in a series of waves and remissions. Her initial episode was an inflammation of her optic nerve that left her temporarily blind for a scary stretch of nearly three months. She eventually regained most of her vision, but the official MS diagnosis drove her through intense emotions of “shock, denial, anger and grief.” In addition, everything she heard and read about her medical predicament painted a bleak picture of a ruthless scourge that was slowly going to debilitate and destroy her life. All this led her into a dark phase in which she withdrew from her old, vivacious self and sunk into a desolate, self-imposed depression.

Ultimately it was two experiences that set her straight. The first was her boyfriend at the time asking her three simple and direct questions.

“He asked me, ‘Can you walk?’ – ‘Can you talk?’ – and most importantly, ‘Can you sing?’, and I really froze in my tracks and realized I could answer yes to all three questions,” she recounts. “And the next day I experienced a transcendental moment while sitting in the bathroom. I heard a voice say to me, ‘Do you want to live, Judy?’ and my spirit replied wholeheartedly, ‘YES.’ I realized then that I was okay and things could be much worse.”

The second major breakthrough was when her close friend and fellow KTU radio host Goumba Johnny invited her out one evening to a comedy club. That night, Montel Williams, a prolific MS advocate also living with the disease was in attendance. Goumba arranged for Judy and Montel to meet and what he said to her completely changed her life.

“Montel just sat down and looked right into my eyes and said, ‘Tell me how’re you really doing,’ and he just sat down and listened. I really needed that,” Judy confesses. “For someone to just sit down and listen to all the feelings and emotions I was going through. Afterwards, he went on to tell me that most importantly, I needed to keep my head straight and stay positive because depression was one of the biggest symptoms that destroys people dealing with MS.”

That deep one-on-one talk, especially from someone going through the same situation really turned her whole attitude around. “It was almost like that day I changed the gloomy glasses I had been wearing all those months, and now I was seeing the world through different eyes.”

Fast-forward four years to the present, and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone more inspirational, passionate and empowering than Judy. She’s only had one other MS attack, and is healthy, active and getting on with the business of life. Almost every comment that emanates from her mouth bursts with light, humor and enthusiasm, and it’s such a welcome change from all the negativity and heaviness people seem to dwell in these days.

One of her favorite sayings is: “The will of God will not take you where the grace of God will not protect you” and another is: “Tomorrow is not promised to anyone – as long as I can wake up each morning, I’m good.” If someone were to describe her current persona, it would be of a deeply spiritual, forward-looking, life-loving diva with a constant disposition of hope and gratitude.

With an aura so unique and effervescent, it would be a no-brainer to see Torres being the star of her own reality show. When asked to describe what her show would be like, she readily answers, the Judy Torres way: with total candor and brimming vigor.

“Ummm, my reality show would probably be called ‘Just Judy’ and it would have to involve my quest to get that Grammy Award I’ve been chasing since I started singing as a teenager. I always see it in my dreams and I know I’ll get it one day – I’m just not sure how. It would also have to show my back-and-forth dalliance with my weight. Also, I’m the one person all my friends come to for help when they are facing serious problems and drama because I have such a big heart and I’m always willing to help, so that facet of my personality has to be shown as well. And lastly, I’m still single and still on the quest for Mr. Right, so I think my dating life would have to factor into the show too.”

On the music front, coming up next for Judy is a new single called “Stay” which is actually a remake of a Country Western song by the band Sugarland. Her official third album is also scheduled to be released soon afterwards.

There’s a brilliant quote that goes: “Every new day is a gift – that’s why it’s called the Present.” That saying is the perfect embodiment of Judy’s everyday attitude and outlook on existence. Regardless the day, place or situation, you can bet she’s out there somewhere enjoying life to the absolute fullest. You’d be wise to do the same.

Raised in Gary, Indiana, Kym Mazelle grew up several hundred feet away from the world-renowned Jackson Family’s recording studio and record company. Initially setting out to become a Diva, Kym studied Opera at Mundelein College of Music in Chicago.

Kym worked at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago and quickly realized she would have to take a different path into the music industry. “I wanted to be part of the entire song development process and perform live in such a way, that would create energy and fun on stage and have the audience going wild!”

In 1986, Kym was introduced to the House Music Pioneer, Marshall Jefferson. That’s right!, Kym was one of the first female House Music Pioneers from Chicago, but hasn’t not been noted as being as such. Her songs include “Useless (I don’t need You Now)“, “Got To Get You Back featuring guitarist Herb Lawson from Ten City”, “Taste My Love” Followed by her top 10 smash hit single “Wait” with Dr. Robert of the Blow Monkeys.

In 1989, Kym started touring throughout Europe with Ten City, and her live performances were even more dynamic than the recordings that helped to establish a huge following to this date. This set up a song writing opportunity with Soul 2 Soul, where Kym co-wrote and produced the world-wide hit single “Missing You” and appeared on their Vol. 2 1990 A New Decade album. Kym’s writing credits on the album and appearances on the Soul 2 Soul World Tour drew more attention to her unique talents.

Her UK album “Crazy” led to the release of Kym’s US debut album entitled “Brilliant!!”, which included collaborations with some of America’s leading producers such as C&C Music Factory, Steve Hurley, Ric Wake, David Morales , Frankie Knuckle, including Rapination that produced the US top 20 hit “Love Me The Right Way“.

In the mid 90’s, Kym continued onto her road to stardom with additional song writing collaborations with Jocelyn Brown and Simon Cowell that produced 2 singles “Enough Is Enough” and “Give Me All Your Lovin”. In addition, Kym scored another Top 10 with her cover of “Young Hearts Run Free” produced by Nellee Hooper from the Grammy nominated Multi-Platinum Soundtrack to Baz Lurhman’s “Romeo & Juliet“. Since then, Kym Mazelle’s powerful R&B vocals, coupled with her energetic style and great stage personality have established her amongst the pantheon of global Dance/Pop Artists.

In 2005, Kym released her Italian album ” The Pleasure Is All Mine“, also appeared on ITV’s Celebrity Fit Club 10 week tour UK and debuted her own live music night “Me & My Big Mouth” which featured live Chicago Style Blues.

Kym has also appeared on countless television shows including: Celebrity Weakest Link, BBC TV Series Trainer, at least 20 appearance on Top Of The Pops, Jools Holland Show, MoBo Awards, Terry Wogan Show, Richard and Judy Show. Kym has graced the stage and recorded with such world class artists and producer including Mick Jagger, Chaka Khan, Maceo Parker, The JB Horns, Van Morrison, R. Kelly, Boy George, Joaquin Cortes, Grace Jones amongst others. You will also recognize her distinctive voice in numerous TV commercials.

In 2008, she was featured in the theatre/cabaret La Bamba with one of Spain’s premiere film directors Mr. Bigas Luna starring in Spain. one of the featured Diva’s the Nov/Dec 08 id magazine.
Over the holidays, I was thinking of something special for the House Music Channel News Blog that could be posted every week that would be exciting to the true House Heads from around the world, and educational for the “newbies” about the History of House Music.

House Music comes from various styles of music (I.e, Gospel, R&B, Jazz, Disco, Rock, Punkout ect) and I’ve put together a collection of recording artist, djs, producers and record labels to help create “HMC Rewind”.

If you missed the first HMC Rewind, I featured C & C Music Factory. C & C Music Factory was from New York and they were one of the first recording acts to get a proper recording and marketing budget from a Major Record company as a dance music group. If you haven’t had a chance to read about C & C Music Factory, click here.

I will be posting the HMC Rewind every Monday starting January 18, 2010 at the House Music Channel New Blog. If you would like to be notified about the updates via e-mail, click here.

Also, I would like to encourage you to leave your comments below each posting. Many of the artist featured will be checking out your comments, and they may contact you.

Many thanks,

Byron Burke
